Parenting Plan Creation and Modification

Georgia Forensic Consulting provides professional consultation to assist parents and attorneys with the creation or modification of parenting plans. Parenting plans are often required in family law matters and serve as the framework that outlines how parents will share responsibilities related to their children following separation or divorce. A clear and well-structured parenting plan can reduce conflict, improve communication between parents, and provide children with stability and predictability during periods of transition.

Our work in this area is informed by extensive experience in mediation, coparenting counseling, and coparenting coordination. Because of this background, we are highly familiar with the types of situations that commonly lead coparents into conflict or ongoing disputes. We regularly see how small ambiguities in parenting plans can evolve into larger disagreements over time. This experience allows us to identify potential problem areas early and draft parenting plans that are practical, clear, and structured in ways that reduce the likelihood of future conflict.

During the process, we work with parents and/or their attorneys to gather information about the child’s developmental needs, each parent’s caregiving role, work schedules, school responsibilities, transportation logistics, and other factors that affect day-to-day parenting. When appropriate, we may also review existing court orders, prior parenting plans, or relevant legal documents to ensure the proposed plan is consistent with the overall legal framework of the case.

Parenting plans typically address important areas such as physical custody schedules, holiday and vacation time, decision-making authority, communication expectations, transportation arrangements, and procedures for resolving disagreements. Additional provisions may also be included regarding school decisions, medical care, extracurricular activities, travel, relocation, or guidelines related to extended family and new partners.

In modification cases, our role often involves helping identify why an existing plan is no longer functioning effectively. Changes in a child’s developmental stage, evolving work schedules, parental relocation, ongoing conflict, or concerns about a child’s wellbeing may require adjustments to an existing agreement. We assist families and attorneys in identifying these issues and developing thoughtful revisions that better reflect the family’s current needs.

These services may be used in both amicable and contested cases. Some families seek assistance in collaboratively developing a parenting plan prior to filing with the court, while others utilize our services to structure proposals or clarify issues during litigation. Our work may result in a drafted parenting plan or consultation summary that attorneys can incorporate into negotiations, mediation discussions, or court filings.

By combining a child-focused perspective with practical experience in conflict resolution and coparenting dynamics, our goal is to help families develop parenting plans that are workable, clear, and designed to support the long-term wellbeing of the child while minimizing the likelihood of future disputes.
