Substance Abuse Evaluations

Georgia Forensic Consulting provides structured substance abuse evaluations to assist attorneys, courts, and individuals in understanding the role that alcohol or drug use may play in a person’s behavior, functioning, and treatment needs. These evaluations are commonly used in criminal cases, bond conditions, probation matters, and mitigation planning when there are concerns that substance use may have contributed to an incident or may affect a person’s ability to comply with court requirements.

Our evaluations incorporate training in the ASAM Criteria, the nationally recognized framework for assessing substance use disorders and determining appropriate levels of care. Using this model, we examine six key areas, including intoxication and withdrawal risk, medical considerations, emotional and behavioral conditions, readiness for change, relapse risk, and the individual’s recovery environment. This structured approach allows us to provide thoughtful and defensible recommendations regarding whether treatment is indicated and what level of care may be appropriate.

The evaluation typically includes a clinical interview, review of relevant records when available, and the use of standardized substance use screening instruments when appropriate. In addition to general substance use screening tools, we may administer other validated assessments designed to examine patterns of use, frequency of substance involvement, relapse risk, and related behavioral or psychosocial factors. These instruments help provide a more objective understanding of the individual’s substance use patterns and the likelihood that substance use may continue without appropriate intervention.

The resulting report summarizes the individual’s substance use history, identifies risk factors and functional impairments, and provides professional opinions regarding treatment needs, rehabilitation potential, and recommendations that may assist the court or legal counsel in planning appropriate interventions.

Substance abuse evaluations can be helpful in identifying individuals who may benefit from outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient treatment, residential treatment, or other recovery supports. In many cases, early identification of treatment needs can help individuals address underlying issues while also demonstrating accountability and willingness to engage in rehabilitation.

These evaluations are not DUI risk assessments and we do not conduct DUI or driver’s license reinstatement evaluations.
